Master of Science in Geology
The Dept. of Geology at Lund University offers a two-year Master's programme (120 ECTS credits) in geology. The MSc programme covers nearly all aspects of geology, from minerals to climate change and the evolution of life. It aims at providing students with a breadth of knowledge and exposure to areas at the cutting edge of geological research, a thorough understanding of the practical applications of geology in the study of Earth, and transferable and subject-specific skills necessary for academic research or entry into various employments in private companies or governmental structures. Training in writing and oral presentation is promoted throughout the period of study.
A BSc in Geology or Earth Sciences or equivalent proficiency. English B (advanced) language proficiency shall be demonstrated in one of the following ways:
- IELTS score of 6.5 (with no score less than 5.5)
- TOEFL paper based score of 575; internet based score of 90
- Cambridge/Oxford – Advanced Certificate or Proficiency
- A Bachelor’s degree from a university where English is the only language of instruction, according to the International Handbook of Universities
- A pass on English course B (Swedish upper secondary school).

The two-year programme encompasses 120 ECTS credits in total, comprising at least 45 credits in compulsory advanced courses in Bedrock Geology or Quaternary Geology and a Master’s degree project equivalent to 45 credits. The remaining 30 credits may consist of elective advanced courses in other subjects and/or geology courses at advanced or basic level, for example within applied geology. There are two main entries to the programme, Bedrock geology and Quaternary geology.
